Stumbling Over Your Behind

I will be brief, for the caption really does say it all.

I tricked you with the title.  We really can’t stumble over our behind, or can we?

A bit of philosophy:

Blunders happen.
There is absolutely nothing
we can do to erase a mistake.
Forget the past, except for
what it taught us.

And now, we move on.  Oh, learn from it for sure, but don’t stumble over it again.  Stumble over something new if stumble you must.

Get your big behind behind you and keep moving I say!

Remind Yourself Every Day

It’s like bathing and eating.  These are daily tasks for most of us.  And so is reminding yourself of your goals, dreams and passions.

I am a writer.  I write every day.  I think about writing every day.

What do you want to do or be?  Perhaps you are a brick layer yet you dream of a singing career.  Remind yourself every day that you are a singer.

It is the act of holding onto a dream and thinking of it at odd moments while you do your daily life that keeps that dream alive.

Give thought to your dream.
Give effort to it.
Think of it every day.
Learn something new about it every day.

And remind yourself every day of what it is that you are going to become.

It is doing within when you are without.

Knock on the Door

I’m discovering an old principle that becomes new every day.  Many of us first learned this in Sunday school, yet it is a life principle.

Knock and the door will be opened to you.  Fear not – I’m reminding us of a life lesson, not a sermon.

The ‘knock on the door’ thing is simply that – in any endeavor, in skill development, and in success in just about everything we attempt, it all begins with the ‘knock’.  You have to knock.

For me as a writer, that means I have to write something every day.  I have to put my hands to the keys and engage my creativity in this skill.  And I can see great improvement after seven years of consistently knocking.

As a banker, I have to let my friends know I’m in the lending business.  I have to knock.

As a musician, you knock by visiting the practice room every day.  You knock on the door of your skill and ask it to improve.

The same is true with golf, football, tennis, ping pong, building a spaceship, building a house, or building a community.

We knock on the door of our skill and we invite it to bring us to new levels.  We desire to ratchet our skill up a notch or two.

What doors are you knocking on?
What is your aim?

By consistently knocking every day, we increase our chances of moving from good to better to best.

Go knock!

Surprise Yourself

A quote:

“I hope, sometime soon,
you surprise yourself.”
~Neil Gaiman – an abridgment of his quote
“I hope, somewhere in the next year …”

What a magnificent thought … to surprise yourself.

Some of us are so routine bound and so predictable that you could set a musical score to our tempo in life.

What if you surprised yourself?  What if you did something so out of character and out of the box that you surprised yourself and all who know you?

Now wouldn’t that be something?

I came close to this when I started writing poetry.  Now keep in mind the objective of my poems – light, humorous, nonsensical.  If you remember these descriptors when you read my poems you’ll perhaps find delight too, and maybe you’ll laugh at some of the turns you discover.  You may even laugh out loud.  Now that would be a hoot? Click here for A Time for Rhyme

I won’t even ask the question “so how are you going to surprise yourself?” That just might spoil the surprise, after all.

Above all, do it.
Get silly.
Get ridiculous.
Get funky.
Get down, and then get back up again.
Do the unheard of.
Do the “I never thought I could do that” thing.
Go somewhere you never thought of and find a few surprises along the way.

Get the picture?

Go therefore and surprise yourself.  You have permission.
